Merlin Passes & free parking; changes to terms and conditions.

December 14th, 2010

Merlin Pass -  your queries answered, (updated 15/12/10)

There has been plenty of debate over the past 48 hours as to the proposed changes in terms and conditions for Merlin Passholders and in particular the free parking perk.  Here we have tried to make sense of the official guidance that has now been issued by Merlin Attractions.

Will I continue to receive free parking with my Merlin Pass?

All current passholders will continue to receive free parking for the duration of their current Merlin Pass.

Will I receive free parking with a new Merlin Pass?

No this free parking perk will no longer be available to new Merlin passholders who renew after 3 January 2011- you will have to pay the standard parking charges as stipulated at each visitor attraction.

Rollercoasters galore

If I renew my Merlin Pass, will I receive free parking?

If you renew your Merlin Pass before the 3 January 2011, you will be under the old terms and conditions and will not have to pay for parking for the duration of your pass.

If you renew your pass after this date, the  free parking perk will not be available.

I have converted my Tesco clubcard vouchers to a Merlin Pass voucher but haven’t yet picked up my new Merlin Pass.  Will I get free parking with this new Merlin Pass?

If you redeem your Tesco Merlin voucher/s before the 3 January 2011, you will be under the old terms and conditions and will receive free parking.  If you redeem your Tesco Merlin voucher/s after this date, you are under the new terms and conditions and will have to pay for parking.  You can upgrade to a Premium Pass for £30 per person with Tesco Merlin vouchers and this will give you free parking.

Will Blackpool Attractions to be included within the Merlin Pass in future?

Yes, Blackpool attractions will be added during the year but with some restrictions.  Those to be added will be;

  • The Blackpool Tower Eye with 4D Cinema (Observation deck at the top of the tower.) Opens Sept 2011
  • The Blackpool Tower Circus.  Opens Sept 2011
  • Jungle Jims (Children’s indoor play area.)  Opens Sept 2011
  • The Blackpool Tower Ballroom.  Opens Sept 2011
  • The Blackpool Dungeon.  Opens September/October 2011
  • Madame Tussauds Blackpool.  Opens April 2011

Blackpool Tower at Legoland Discovery Centre

What other changes are coming into force with the new Merlin Passes?

2011 Merlin Passes will also see the following changes;

  • No entry to Legoland, Windsor before 2pm during the month of August.
  • No entry to the Blackpool Tower attractions from 22nd – 30th October.

How can I regain my free parking perk?

The only way to keep this free parking perk is to move to a Premium Merlin Pass.  A Premium Merlin Pass gives your free parking and does not have any restrictions upon use.  However there are rumours that the free parking perk for the Premium Merlin Pass may only be for 2011?  We await further clarification on this matter.

Can I use Tesco clubcard vouchers to purchase a Premium Merlin Pass?

Whilst Premium Merlin Passes are NOT currently available under the clubcard scheme, you can use your Tesco Merlin vouchers and upgrade to a Premium Pass for £30 per person.

So why not just to switch to a Premium Merlin Pass?

In a word…money!  For a new customer an individual Premium Merlin Pass would put you back £175.

Merlin are allowing customers to upgrade their standard to a premium Merlin Pass for £30 per person throughout the year.

Alternatively, existing passholders can renew to an individual premium Merlin Pass for £129.60.

One thing to keep in mind is there have always been plenty of deals around on standard Merlin Passes, (Capital FM are currently offering standard Merlin Passes for £80).

Any deals coming up for Premium Merlin Passes?

See renewal prices above.

So what price will this be for a Premium Merlin Pass?

New customers will pay £175 for an individual pass.  Existing passholders can upgrade at any time in the year for £30 per person or take advantage of the renewal offer that is running all year, see above.

So is an upgrade to a Premium Merlin Pass worth it?

We DO KNOW that a Premium Merlin Pass will cost you £175 for new customers.

We DO NOW KNOW renewal and upgrade costs for both a Merlin and Premim Merlin Pass.

We DO KNOW that you are in for some pretty hefty parking charges if you stick with a Merlin Pass.

We DO NOT KNOW if the free parking perk will continue with the Premium Merlin Pass after 2011.

If like me, you have managed to get hold of Merlin Pass for around £75, WE DO KNOW you are looking at a hefty increase in subs to the Premium Pass.

In a nutshell, it’s planning out which attractions you wish to visit, how many times and whether this will be peak or non peak time….and then it’s doing the maths!!

I’ve heard there are Restaurant deals with a Merlin Annual Pass?

  • 2 for 1 at Prezzo
  • Kids eat free at Hard Rock Cafe, (specific sites)
  • 20% off Cafe Rouge
  • 20% off Strada
  • 20% off Bella Italia

I’ve seen half price Merlin Pass deals in the past?

  • Here’s a deal with Capital FM where you can pick up a Merlin Pass for almost half price! For just £80, you can pick up a Merlin Pass, (standard price £150) with £5 of your purchase price going to Help a London Child.  Just call 0871 282 9230 and quote Capital FM, calls will cost on average 10p a minute.  Please note terms and conditions have  changed for those purchasing a pass in this way including the loss of the free parking perks, (see below for more details).

  • Often passholder events, (that tend to allow passholders to bring up to 2 guests), offer half price deals so worth looking out for those!

  • Last year Merlin Passes were half price at the beginning of January for 10 days…so watch this space and we’ll let you know if this deal runs again!

Any other deals for Merlin Annual Passes?

  • Use your tesco clubcard vouchers to purchase an individual Merlin Pass for just £50 in clubcard vouchers.

Are the terms & conditions changing for a Merlin Pass?

It looks likely that the free car parking perk is now going – it certainly is for those purchasing a Merlin Pass through Capital FM.  This is a substantial loss for those that make good use of their pass throughout the year.  There also appears to be more restrictions on use during busy periods.

Tesco clubcard deals; how to max out your benefits

October 23rd, 2010

Ensure you max out your benefits with Tesco clubcard vouchers.

1. If you spend them in store, you only manage to save the value of the voucher, (or just two times their value when voucher exchange promotions are running.)

2. Redeem your tesco clubcard points before the 6 December to ensure you receive up to four times their value.  More information on changes being introduced by Tesco at Tesco clubcard benefits reduced.

3. From 6 December, it is still more cost effective to redeem your clubcard points for vouchers at three times their value rather than in store at cost!

Find cost effective deals in the brochure.

1.Whilst reward vouchers can be redeemed for up three/four times their value, some deals effectively offer you less than this.

2.For value for money, calculate how the vouchers are best spent for your family taking into account other promotions, vouchers available and the needs of your family.

Combine tesco deals with other offers to max out your savings.

Use your tesco clubcard reward vouchers wisely to ensure best value. For example for a family of four off to Alton Towers, combine a 2 for 1 voucher with two tesco day entry rewards, (wise to split into twos at the kiosk to avoid the one offer per transaction!)  This way you can bank additional Tesco clubcard reward vouchers for your next day out too!

Rollercoasters galore

Additional clubcard points promotions.

Clearly this is what Tesco want you to do, but it is worth keeping an eye out for additional points promotions to build your rewards as long as you are buying necessary household items!

Annual Memberships from Tesco Clubcard deals can potentially offer the best value for money in days out.

1. Not only do annual memberships give you unlimited access to your favourite top attractions, they often come with plenty of additional benefits to maximize your savings.  Check out these options:

Merlin Annual Pass: this gains you entry to Alton Towers, Thorpe park, Warwick Castle, Legoland, Chessington, London Eye and plenty more.  In addition you can secure Early Ride Time at Alton Tower, (great for queue busting), free parking plus 20% off food, drink & souvenirs at many of these settings!

English Heritage Membership; with over 400 historic settings to choose from throughout England, not only are you gaining new places to discover but helping to conserve our heritage to boot!
